But this device (which takes any wearable form you'd prefer), gives off an untraceable magic scent that causes small living creatures to feel at ease in the presence of the wearer. Naturally, it's only a proto-type, but will work on any creatures small than a large dog. Because this is magi-tech, it will only work in cities, and does not need to be plugged in or charged.
Naturally, the scientist won't mention that he chose Gershom because he thinks his appearance makes him a really solid test subject for it's effectiveness. Whether the device is 100% effective or not is up to you!
